What is the City? - Odeonsplatz

A happening on the Odeonsplatz
Saturday, 10 October from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m.

For the opening of the Kammerspiele, 150 citizens of Munich were supposed to have appeared in an urban space performance directed by Richard Gregory, based on a concept by the British artist Jeremy Deller. The production team interviewed and took portrait photographs of lots of great people, yet before the event could be realised, the latest coronavirus developments scuppered our plans. As a result, it is more important than ever to occupy the public space despite everything with a live-action event and provide an example of the many different stories that the people of Munich have to tell. The one-off event ‘What is the City?’ examines the meaning of a functioning and lively city – and whets people’s appetite for the temporarily postponed, but not cancelled city space performance ‘What is the City but the People?’* The portraits of Munich citizens, which started with 60 people, will be continued live and made accessible to everyone, and a band featuring Munich musicians will perform. And everyone can make their own statement about what Munich means to them and what needs to be changed.
