BASED ON THE TRILOGY BY VIRGINIE DESPENTES
Director: Stefan Pucher
An unsuccessful screenwriter with fantasies of running amok. A former drug dealer who has re-trained as an Internet troll. A professor’s daughter who converts to Islam, to her father’s despair. A drug-addicted pop star and his manager. A coke-sniffing trader, a homeless dog-lover with a great sense of justice and an unscrupulous film producer. A former porn actress and her transsexual boyfriend. A right-wing radical H&M sales assistant, a lonely civil servant, a sick wife-beater and a waitress with a talent for tattooing. These characters populate the life of Vernon Subutex, a bankrupt record dealer by trade without a roof over his head. The French writer, musician, and film director Virginie Despentes (Baise Moi!, King Kong Theory) gives them all a voice. They dream of a better life in very different ways. Vernon Subutex has been hailed as the social novel of our times, The Human Comedy (Balzac) of the 21st century. Director Stefan Pucher, who recently directed “América” by T.C. Boyle and “Wartesaal” at the Kammerspiele, brings Vernon Subutex and his gang to the stage of the Kammerspiele.
