MK:

Munich New Playwriting Award 2025

The Department for Arts and Culture of the City of Munich, the Drei Masken Verlag publishing house and the Münchner Kammerspiele are calling for submissions for the Munich New Playwriting Award. The award is endowed by the Edith and Werner Rieder Foundation with prize money of 20,000 euros.

Rules and Regulations

The prize is intended for artists at the beginning of their careers who have had a maximum of two works produced at a theatre and who are not yet represented by a drama publisher in German-speaking countries.

Applications must include the following documents:

  • 10 pages of sample scenes from a completed – but not yet premiered – text
  • 1-page synopsis for this piece of work
  • synopsis (max. 3 pages) for a second writing project to be developed as part of a residency in collaboration with the Münchner Kammerspiele
  • CV in tabular form including contact details

While the work itself can be written in any original language, the documents listed above must be submitted either in German or in an English translation.

Only excerpts from one completed work and the two synopses may be submitted per playwright. These must be sent together in a single PDF file to foerderpreis.dramatik@muenchen.de.

To support as wide a variety of different perspectives as possible, we actively encourage people with a migrant background to apply for the Munich New Playwriting Award.

Procedure

In the run-up to the presentation of the Munich New Playwriting Award, a jury will select up to five playwrights from the applicants. These playwrights will then be invited to participate in a writers’ residency in Munich designed for them to develop a new writing project with support from the Kammerspiele. The residency will culminate in the award ceremony as part of the Long Night of New Drama at the Kammerspiele in June 2025.

The Münchner Kammerspiele will present the works nominated for the award in a series of workshop productions during the Long Night of New Drama. The theatre then plans to premiere in the upcoming season the play that the award winner has developed during the residency.

Prize Money / Options

The Munich New Playwriting Award is endowed with prize money of 20,000 euros. In addition, each playwright or collective selected to attend the residency is allocated funding of 3,500 euros and is also provided with accommodation in Munich during the residency. The Münchner Kammerspiele will receive a time-limited option to premiere all the works nominated for the award. The Drei Masken Verlag publishing house will offer to represent the selected playwrights. The award ceremony is scheduled to be held in June 2025 during the LONG NIGHT OF NEW DRAMA as part of the “New Time, New Drama” programme at the Münchner Kammerspiele.
