When the Capitol in Washington D.C. was attacked with brute physical force on 6 January 2021, when it looked like the home of democracy was about to be torn down, those inside the building decided to resume the interrupted hearing on the election of the new President. They decided to keep talking and fight the physical violence with speech – even those who were not blameless themselves in the betrayal of democracy, and who would soon betray it again. During that night, sometimes with trembling voices, the speakers were no longer power-hungry politicians but defenders of democracy.

Opening a longer programme focus on the threats of authoritarianism, the Münchner Kammerspiele recollects a memorable night for democracy with this reading.
