You can recognise a shattered building. It was a tower block, the rubble from the destruction lies on the ground. Torn cables and wires hang from the rest of the building.

Almost 10 months after the deadliest earthquakes in the recent history of Kurdistan, Turkey and Syria, we take a look at the region for the second time. This evening, we focus on the political calculations and failures of the authorities and construction companies that allowed the earthquake to have such devastating consequences. The earthquake disaster at the beginning of February cost over 50,000 people their lives, millions were left homeless and lost everything.

How could it be that thousands of houses collapsed like sandcastles? Why did government aid arrive so late or not at all in the areas mainly inhabited by Kurds and other minorities? What are the lasting consequences of the immense destruction and current political decisions for the local demography? Rosa Burç will shed light on these issues in a keynote speech and discussion with Suzan Çakar. There will also be live music by Sakina Teyna, accompanied on the electric piano by Serhat Kayırılan, in order to pause together and remember the victims.

Under the following link, we have compiled a list of organisations that are committed to helping the local victims and to which donations can be made: https://linktr.ee/060223
