“In the war on immigration, looking the other way is the most effective weapon.”

The radio message comes in in the middle of the night. A maritime emergency! A double-decker wooden boat with 400 people on board, 20 are already missing. The captain of the Sea Watch 3 sends out distress calls, the ship sets course and a race against time begins. The volunteer sea rescuers have been training for months, every move has to be right, every moment counts.

The descriptions of the rescue missions of the Sea Watch 3 crew off the coast of Sicily, which comic artist Adrian Pourviseh accompanied as an observer and sea rescuer two years ago, are breathless and oppressive. The inhuman tension between missions, the fear of repression by Frontex states and Libyan irregulars, who abduct refugees from international waters on behalf of Europe, and the highly professional execution of their missions, in which a few moments can make the difference between life and death - Adrian Pourviseh’s “The Shimmer of the Sea” is a drawn eyewitness account of the terrible everyday life at Europe’s external borders and a loud call for more humanity.

On this evening, Adrian Pourviseh will be a guest at the Habibi Kiosk, read from his graphic novel, show excerpts and talk about his work with Julia Ley. The event is taking place as part of the International Weeks against Racism.
