To get in the mood for the 35th Turkish Film Festival Munich, which will be showing unusual arthouse cinema with feature films, documentaries and short films by committed filmmakers from Turkey from April 17 to 21, we invite you to a special concert at the Habibi Kiosk. Singer Süreyya Akay and bağlama player Yasin Yardim will take you on a musical journey to the places where this year’s films are set. The journey starts in Istanbul and continues across the Aegean and Central Anatolia to the east of the country. The songs, which are influenced by Turkey’s multicultural musical traditions, are accompanied by scenes from the respective films.

Süreyya Akay, who came to Germany from Ankara in her early youth, has lived in Munich since 1992. She was a choral singer and soloist in two Turkish classical music choirs. At the same time, she participated in the projects of “Turkish and Bavarian”, “Turkish and Greek” folk songs and “Tango” in these choirs. She has released two music albums. The first is a production with various Kurdish and Turkish musicians and the second is a maxi-single that also contains songs from Armenian music. She prepared and presented music projects “Across the Orient”, “Sounds from East to West”, “Sounds of Migration and Longing” with various musicians and cultural instruments. She has continued to give concerts with the music group “Munich Anatolian Project” and “Ringstreet Trio” since its foundation.

Yasin Yardım (graduate engineer, musician and bağlama instructor) was born and raised in Munich in 1981. He picked up his first bağlama at the age of 11 and started running bağlama courses at the Initiativgruppe e.V. in Munich at the age of 16. Since 1997, several hundred students have had the pleasure of learning the instrument with Yasin Yardim. He has led numerous workshops and has been involved in various music projects. Together with Kemal Avcıoğlu (certified music teacher) and Michael Körger (certified social pedagogue), he launched the music concept “Music Projects in Intercultural Youth Work” in 2003, which deals with the connections between cognitive learning, intercultural youth work and music. This music concept also laid the foundation for today’s Mikado music project at Initiativgruppe e.V., where he led the Bağlama lessons for 18 years. He deepened his skills on the bağlama through regular private lessons with various bağlama virtuosos such as Dr. Prof. Okan Murat Öztürk (musician, musicologist, lecturer Ankara Güzel Sanatlar Üniversitesi) and Ünsal Doğan (Bağlama player at the Cultural Department in Turkey).
