In 1959, the Clutter family in Kansas is murdered in cold blood in the middle of the night. Just seven years later, author Truman Capote published an incredible factual novel about the crime. His research was as unique as it was questionable. In his book, the movie based on it and the real case, the who, the where, the when and also the how are clarified - only the why remains open.

In the video essay “Based on a true Story by Truman Capote”, three performers delve deeper into the famous crime case, become entangled in digressions and spin a web driven by conspiracy and paranoia. What does the deadly attack on the 35th US President Kennedy have to do with true crime? What does it mean when people feel as if they are no longer living in our shared reality, but in a movie, a story? And how can a real event be portrayed at all?
