“Newroz” literally means “the new day”. A new day on which spring begins. A new day on which we jump through the fire and leave another winter behind us. A new day when we come together, set the table and eat. A new day of dancing and singing. A new day when people like us are politicized and criminalized simply because they exist and speak. A new day in which we live, an act of resistance.

The Habibi Kiosk, together with the Kurdish Community of Munich, invites you to a Kurdish New Year celebration with finger food, music, art and texts. Come along and celebrate with us!

Program:

Keynote speech by Shehnaz Chikha about the history and special features of the Kurdish Newroz festival

Traditional Kurdish songs sung and played by Dara Lalo (vocals) and Jano Estirvan (guitar)

Text contribution by Jean Dumler

Live music by Cemîle Dincer (vocals), accompanied by Ahmedo (with tenbur and lavta)

Poems by Dîlan Z. Çapan

Live music by KCEO

Paintings by Hasan Malla will also be on display throughout the evening.

Note: Afghans, Persians, Baluchis and Tajiks, for example, also celebrate their own specific New Year’s celebrations on March 20 or 21, each of which has its own customs and specific features. On this evening, we are celebrating Kurdish Newroz because it is still largely suppressed and banned to this day, which is precisely why it needs places and solidarity.
