Erinnerung und Dialog: Comitato 3 Ottobre

On October 3, 2013, a boat carrying over 540 people capsized off Lampedusa on its way from Africa to Europe. 368 drowned, more than ever before.

Just over eleven years later, Gina Penzkofer talks to Tareke Brhane, who is campaigning with his organization Comitato 3 Ottobre to establish an annual day of remembrance on 3 October at national and European level.

Especially in times of political uncertainty and excessive demands, this initiative is a reminder of the danger that the rejection and dehumanization of refugees is presented as a supposedly simple solution to social problems. The social conflicts in Europe are repeatedly carried out on the backs of those who are already at risk. The initiative for October 3rd underlines the urgency of safe escape routes and the great importance of civil sea rescue and refugee aid.

The discussion will take place as part of the exhibition “Das Floß der Medusa” at Pavillon 333. From October 17 to November 3, visitors can experience a multimedia installation and performance by Karen Modrei, Mariko Takahashi and Stefan Winter. Based on the painting “Das Floß der Medusa” by Théodore Géricault, it deals with the events of October 3, 2013.
